When teaching pushes your buttons
When Teaching Pushes Your Buttons: Schemas, Stress and Healthier Coping
This workshop by Samuel Hilgefort (FPN) brings together teaching staff from across UM to reflect on recurring stressors in our educational practice. In this interactive workshop, we use ideas from Schema Therapy to explore what happens when teaching ‘pushes our buttons’. Together, we will unpack common stressors, look at how our schemas and coping styles may show up in teaching and professional development work, and explore concrete schema-informed strategies for healthier coping as university teachers.
Workshop schedule
- Brief sharing of real examples of problems teachers face at FPN (teaching stressors / tricky situations),
- Introduction to Schema Therapy concepts: schemas, coping styles, and modes, and how they show up in teaching,
- Small-group discussions of challenging teaching situations from different faculties, using the schema lens,
- Exploration of interventions and healthy coping strategies within the schema framework (what teachers can practically do differently),
- Plenary debrief / wrap-up: sharing insights, take-home strategies, and space for questions.
This activity may count towards your Continuing Professional Development (CPD) if relevant to your situation.
